Was it my arrogance?
My unfulfillable promises?
That I'd keep everyone safe,
for all of eternity?
Their mirth, their smile,
my pride, their trust I had earned.
I had promised to be their hero,
Their hero, on and on.
But here do I stand in ruins,
all left of their hope,
left to burn,
down in flames.
glass windows, once whole,
shattered to millions, like their eyes,
Once gleaming, once radiant.
Through the bitterness, I smile.
Desolate, sympathetically.
Had I really thought I was capable of keeping them safe forever?
